The site of an ancient battle, the gray marshes between Mordor and Emyn Muil are a labyrinthine swamp of sodden soil and choked ponds. No bird call cuts the windless air, nor does any fish's tail disturb the weed-filled ponds. They call them the Dead Marshes, a stagnant quagmire where only the foolish or desperate dare choose a prudent path.

In this damp swamp lie the warriors who died long ago: Orcs, Elves and Men. Cold flames flicker over their unnaturally unchanging remains, and lifeless white eyes beckon travelers to a watery doom.
With no other way open, Sam and Frodo must make their way through the swamps with Gollum as a guide. Mount Doom is their goal and the One Ring their prized errand - a quest that requires secrecy and stealth.

The Hobbits must trust the word and the eye of their treacherous adviser, who has passed this way before and knows its secret ways. However, with each step, the Ring weighs heavier on Frodo and the supernatural magic of the mud calls to him, drawing him towards the water, where green hands hang down ready to pull him under, dragging him to a cold, wet grave.

As we follow Frodo's journey with the ring, Sam and Frodo were far from home, far from friends, and far from safety. Though the young Hobbit had a lot of trouble with death, the Dead Marshes were a visceral and physical manifestation of his descent into despair.

Taking advantage of the mystical nature of the environment and the undead spirits that haunt the waters below, we wanted to showcase the two worlds that often overlap in Middle-earth: the magical and the mundane. Above the waters, Sam and Gollum desperately try to save the sinking Hobbit. Under the waters, the ghosts push Frodo further into the depths. The depiction of these two contrasting worlds in one scene proved pivotal in the creation of this collector's item.

Using all the tools and techniques available, exploring lighting options and paint schemes, experimenting with materials and pushing the limits of how we make collectibles has elevated this Masters Collection to a new level.

The Dead Marshes invites you to explore every inch, viewed from every angle, with every component laid bare, to truly do the scene the justice it deserves. In an instant of terror and tension, no detail can escape.
