Khazad-dûm was the largest of the Dwarf Kingdoms of antiquity. A vast labyrinth of corridors and passages carved deep into the Misty Mountains, contained the city of Dwarrowdelf, home of the Lombards: Durin's people. For thousands of years Khazad-dûm remained the seat of Dwarven power in Middle-earth, and as long as the Dwarves occupied its halls the work continued unabated. Following rich veins of Mithril silver, the most precious of metals, the Dwarves dug deeper and deeper tunnels.

In times of wealth and peace the western entrance to Khazad-dûm was open. Trade thrived between Durin's people and the neighboring Elves. The doors themselves were a symbol of friendship between the two, forged as they were by both dwarven and elven hands. The mithril mined within was magically transformed into ithildine letters and iconography that glowed only in the light of the moon or stars. Their transparent surfaces were inlaid with the initials of their creators, the king, and the enigmatic inscription "Speak friend and enter."

While the Dwarves enjoyed long years of quiet prosperity, the day finally came when war and death overran Khazad-dûm and the Gates of Durin were sealed. In the waning years of the Third Age of Middle-earth, no Dwarves dared cross the threshold of the once proud empire of their people. It was called Moria, the Black Pit, home of Orcs and worse.

Thus, it was when the Fellowship arrived at the Celebdil Reefs that they found the Gates closed and surrounded by decay. Even the once-beautiful holly trees that flanked the entrance were deathly pale, their roots drowned in a sickly black pool gathered before the gate. From beneath the darkness, hostile eyes watched their companions as they halted and sought a way inside.
